タイトル　：“Economic Growth through Basic Research by Firms: A Science Linkage Approach”　(joint with Makoto Nirei and Masahiro Oroku)

要　旨　　：In light of the increasing trend in basic research expenditure by private firms, we investigate the relationship between basic research and firm performance. Our findings reveal that even relatively small firms engage in basic research, leading to an ambiguous relationship between basic research and firm size, while profitability consistently improves with basic research. To explain these observations, we develop an endogenous growth model featuring heterogeneous firms that invest in both basic and applied research. The model assumes that applied research is constrained by the expansion of fundamental knowledge through basic research. Our analysis highlights two key dimensions of firms’ investment decisions: firm size and the necessity of basic research for future innovation. The model also identifies a potential growth trap, where the absence of basic research results in stagnant productivity improvements from applied research over the long run. Quantitative analysis shows that rising demand for basic research contributes to a decline in aggregate R&D efficiency. Public investment in basic research plays a significant role in enhancing the growth rate by addressing underinvestment caused by knowledge spillovers, whereas the impact of basic research subsidies remains limited.
